From an imperial star base, battle squadrons spread out through the vastness of space with the mission to settle new planets and mine their raw ores. The player builds up an industrial infrastructure and constructs weapons factories and strong defensive fortifications to protect his base.

He either unites with other players to form mighty alliances or fights his way alone through interstellar battles: To become the most powerful fleet admiral, strategic warfare is required. Spy probes send important information about the enemy, with effective research the extraction of raw materials can be improved as well as the efficient use of energy for attacking and defending, and the weapons factory keeps high class battle squadrons ready for fleet maneuvers.

Space Invasion

Hi Space Pilots,

since our last hardware upgrade, the game was running quite fast except casual but annoying lags when opening pages. After getting rid of one bottleneck after another (such as low RAM, separating I/O hard drive operations of MySQL from those of httpd), the next bottleneck turned out to be the huge amount of php processes that want to be executed at the same time when the online users count reaches 2000.
The best thing now would be to optimize the program code to make it use fewer processes. But this won't be done from one day to another and neither you nor us want to wait that long.
Today we had a simple yet effective idea. As you might remember, we had two hardware upgrades so far: First we ordered an additional server just for the databases; then we got a better web server. The old webserver had nothing to do anymore. We now installed some kind of simple load balancer which redirects on half of the users to the one server and the other half to the other server. That way, we now temporarily got rid of the problem with many php processes and since about two hours, the game is running very fast and stable.
We calculated, that our systems should now be able to handle about 4000 users at the same time without any loss in speed. Let's see if we are right. ;)

Hi Space Pilotes!

The big move is over…almost. Why almost? Well, tonight we directed our domain names to the IP address of the new web server but it may take up to 24 hrs. until this takes effect at your local PC.
Those of you who know how to do it can do a ping on spaceinvasion.info. If the server answers with the IP 176.9.54.238, you are already playing on the new server. If the answer is 188.40.68.74, then you are still playing on the old server. In this case, you have several possibilities to change to the new server:
- Just wait until your DNS data has been updated automatically.
- Do a ipconfig /flushdns (in the command shell of Windows PCs).
- Close your internet connection and dial in into the internet again. If you use a wireless LAN router, you might want to just disconnect your router from it's power supply for a few seconds.

In case you worry about this: It actually doesn't matter on which server you are playing. Both game servers store their data on the same external database server. The worst thing that can happen is that you are logged out of the game during DNS update on your PC. Then you'd just have to login again.

With the last step of this move we managed it to keep the downtime of the game to nearly zero. We hope that you all enjoy the speed of the game now. :)

Hi Space Pilots,

as announced yesterday, we ordered new hardware on Monday night which was delivered Tuesday morning. We started right away to set up the new server. On Tuesday night we already moved some smaller things and did some more optimization. Actually you should already be able to notice some improvements in speed, especially of the game login and our discussion board. But that's not all yet!
We are planning to do the "big move" on Wednesday night when all the game scripts will be put onto the new server which will give us the most improvement in the game speed.
We are very looking forward to the moment, when the games runs stable and fast on the new servers since we will then have more time for taking care of support, events, bug fixes and building up a great community of Space Pilots. :)

Hi Space Pilotes,

on Friday we moved our databases to a new and more powerful server. The instant effect was not quite as good as we hoped. The game was still much to slow during the weekend and most of Monday. Tonight we managed to do some optimation in the server configuration files which led to a better performance. The game is still too slow but - compared to the last three days - it's working a little better.
We still want you to be able to click a link and have the new page opened rather in 2 seconds instead of (sometimes) 15. Therefore we will continue optimization of the code and of the server configuration. But we will also invest in even more powerful hardware. An additional server has already been ordered and we expect it to be delivered tomorrow. We'll then try to get it working for the game as soon as possible. And of course we'll let you know about about it.

Thank you for your loyalty.

Hi Space Pilots!

As you might have noticed, our game was very slow yesterday. Clicking on something and having to wait for minutes until the server replies is no fun at all!

The last days our team discussed a lot with each other and with externals about ways to optimize our server structure. The result is a mixture of a hardware upgrade and continuous optimization of the server configuration and the programming code.

We’ve ordered an additional server last night which is optimized for processing big databases on web sites with high traffic and we are happy that it was delivered today already!

Tonight we will move our huge databases to that new server. We hope you understand that there will be a downtime this night approximately between 0 a.m. and 1 a.m. CET. We need this time to dump the database contents, transfer them to the new server, import them to the database there and to apply the necessary changes to the configuration files.

SAVE THE PLANET!
Did you know? Our servers exclusively use energy from renewable sources!

Hi Space Pilotes,

even though there were some technical problems during the owner change of this game, we are still happy that we were able to transfer most of the data to our new servers without problems.

Since Monday noon it's possible to register for new accounts again.
We're planning to open the new German and International Universes On Wednesday at 6 p.m.

These are just some of the recent fixes and improvements:
- language bug in fleet news fixed
- language bug in templates fixed
- new shoutbox for alliances added
- added flags showing your local settings
- "59 seconds bug" fixed
- ingame currency Ylem added
- shop system added with assistants, upgrades and packages
- new research added: Ylem extraction
- made it possible to transfer old user accounts during owner change of the game

When problems occoured, most of you had a lot of understanding for our situation. Thank you very much for that. This has been a big motivation for us.

Even though we were well prepared, there were a lot of technical surprises for us today. Thanks to our moderator team that helped us a lot to give you a quick support. It was just awesome to see how excited you were about the restart of the game. This encourages us a lot to keep going on. :) After all, we are quite satisfied with what we have achieved so far but there is still a lot to do. We are still fixing some things tonight and will also keep going on with this on Sunday. And we hope that we will be able to greet new users soon - hopefully on Monday. Thanks again to all of you! Hello Space Pilot,

just before the start there unfortunately are some bad news:

Due to problems with the global registry, which are not under our control and may not be resolved before Monday, it will today only be possible to login with an existing account in the retro universe. The retro universe will be fully available.

We will keep you up to date when the problem has been fixed and more universe will be opened.

We wish all players a successful start in the retro universe. May the Force be with you!

Space Invasion

Hi Space Pilots!

as you know, we're right now performing the move and the operator change for our game.

During the last weeks we have spent much time trying to do the paperwork (contract negotiations, commercial registration, registration with the tax office, appointments with tax consultants and accountants) and to do the technical preparations and necessary programming.

Not all tasks were predictable - especially not, how much time they would cost. Some things took longer than expected, others went faster than we thought. Anyway, we have tried to do the jobs as quickly as possible and to prepare the move as good as we could. Until know we are quite satisfied with the outcome of our planning.

It is furthermore planned that we re-open the game on coming Saturday at 4 p.m. (CET / GMT +01). Starting at this time, the queue for the retro universe is opened, which will then be directly processed. If everything goes according to plan, you can start right at 6 p.m.

We want to point out that the given time is an estimation. If we run into unpredictable problems, we might postpone the start. Once we know that this will be the case, we'll let you know right here at this point.

We thank you very much for your understanding, for your encouraging words and for the loyalty that you bring to this game. This made it possible that this game even still exists.
