NEW GLOBAL MISSION - SINK THE INQUISITOR!

All hands on deck!

The Spanish must really be reaching the end of their fuse after our last few little adventures, because from what I'm hearing... it seems they're moving on to drastic measures.

Rumor has it, they're building a ship.

Not just any ship, mind you, but a vessel the likes of which has never been seen - a ship that could turn a Kraken into calamari! Care to take a guess at who's meant to get the business end of it?

Word around Hispaniola is she'll be fit to sail in a fortnight …But not if we sink her first! Gather together all the black powder ye can get your hooks on, we'll float it up quiet as you please and blow her to smithereens!

YOUR MISSION:

Pillage and Plunder as many Prizes as you can find and gather enough black powder barrels to blow the Inquisitor to kingdom-come! All barrels will be smuggled to Cpt. Bonnie Anne's flagship once recovered.

No pirate risks his life unless it be by his own say-so… this will take us all pulling together, but participation be voluntary.

Your Pirate Queen,

Bonnie Anne

Pirates: Tides of Fortune

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

Cornelis Jol was on of the first to use a wooden peg leg. He was nicknamed Houtebeen, because he lost a leg during battle and got a wooden leg. The Spanish also nicknamed him El Pirata.

Cornelis Jol came from a simple family in the fishing village of Scheveningen, now part of The Hague. He joined the Dutch West India Company in 1626 and quickly climbed the ranks to become admiral. He was renowned for his courage, his skill as a navigator and his humane treatment of prisoners of war.

Jol crossed the Atlantic Ocean nine times to attack the Spanish and Portuguese along the coast of Brazil and in the Caribbean. During one of his earliest voyages, he captured the island of Fernando de Noronha off the coast of Brazil. However, he was soon expelled by Portuguese forces.

In 1633, he and another corsair attacked Campeche in the Yucatán Peninsula, then held by Spain, with a fleet of ten ships. In 1635 he was captured near Dunkirk by Dunkirk privateers but released. He defeated the Spanish at a battle near Cabañas, Cuba in 1638, capturing all five enemy vessels. While attempting to capture the Spanish treasure fleet, he and Jan Lichthart engaged in a naval battle with Spanish admiral Don Carlos Ibarra off the coast of Cuba. In Spain, he was falsely reported to have been killed in the confrontation. He also commanded a squadron of seven ships at the Battle of the Downs, a decisive defeat of the Spanish, in 1639.

In 1640, while awaiting the Spanish treasure fleet off Havana, Cuba, his fleet was caught in a hurricane and four of the ships were wrecked on the shore.

In 1640, Jol set out from Brazil for the coast of Africa, where he took the city of Luanda (in Angola) and the island of São Tomé from the Portuguese. While on São Tomé, he was struck by malaria and died on October 31, 1641.

Pirates: Tides of Fortune

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

... Born John Roberts, Bartholomew Roberts, also known as Bart Roberts, was a Welsh pirate who raided shipping off the Americas and West Africa between 1719 and 1722. He was the most successful pirate of the Golden Age of Piracy, capturing far more ships than some of the best-known pirates of this era such as Blackbeard or Captain Kidd.

His first act as a pirate captain was to lead his crew to Príncipe to avenge the death of his old captain Howell Davis. Roberts and his crew sprang onto the island in the darkness of night, killed a large portion of the male population, and stole all items of value that they could carry away. Soon afterwards he captured a Dutch Guineaman, then two days later an English ship called the Experiment.

Roberts was the archetypal pirate captain in his love of fine clothing and jewelry, but had some traits unusual in a pirate, notably a preference for drinking tea rather than rum. Black Bart was not as cruel to prisoners as some pirates, such as Edward Lowe, but did not treat them as well as did Howell Davis or Edward England. Captain Roberts was killed by grapeshot cannon fire, which struck him in the throat, while he stood on the deck. Before his body could be captured by Ogle, Roberts’ wish to be buried at sea was fulfilled by his crew, who weighted his body down and threw his body overboard after being tied in his ship’s sail. It was never found. Some consider his death to mark the end of the Golden Age of Piracy.
