Pirates: Tides of Fortune

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

… often overlooked, the Striker was a native of the West Indies, typically from Darien or the Mosquito Coast. They were expert hunters who trapped sea turtles and manatees; fished for sharks and other large fish; and also hunted wild game when the the crew came ashore. Their knowledge of local plants aided in collecting edible fruits and vegitables as well as medicinal plants and herbs.Their expert ability at hunting and fishing earned them a spot among the crew, Their hatred of Spain assured their loyalty and ferocity in battle. They were not kept aboard for the seaman ship, their job was to catch fish and kill Spaniards.

... Tortuga or Turtle Island, presently known as Ile de la Tortue and located off the Northwest shore of present day Haiti, on the Island of Hispaniola.

Tortuga was first discovered and named by the Spanish. The name Tortuga means Sea Turtle. It was named this because the island reesembles a large turtle. Despite its immediate proximity to Hispanola, an island claimed by Spain since the time of Columbus, the French decided to establish a settlement of sorts on the island in 1625. Most of the settlers came from the nearby French colonies of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The Spaniards weren't really happy with these French settlers in their backyard and tried to dislodge them. The first of these attacks was in 1629 and was only marginally successful. Many of the colonists were the true buccaneers, the hunters of wild oxen and pigs. Rather than fight the Spaniards in open combat, they fled across the narrow channel and began hunting on the northern coast of Hispanola.

Strategically, Tortuga was a most important island for France. To the Northeast of Tortuga, is Cuba, the last stop of the Treasure Fleet before returning to Spain. France, like most of Europe was at war with Spain for most of the 1600s. Tortuga became a perfect spot to ambush the returning Spanish fleets.

The French Governors of Tortuga would, for a price, offer safe harbor to just about any ship that wasn't Spanish. They were also entrusted with the powers to offer letter of Marques to privateers and weren't too picky on the nationality of the crew so long as they agreed to attack Spanish ships and split the booty with them. As such Tortuga became the home of the Brethren of the Coast.

Pirates: Tides of Fortune

Captains!

Are you ready to know who won 500 RUBIES?

You did a great job and 3 randomly chosen winners get 500 RUBIES each.

So the lucky winners are:

- Alison Corless

- John Davis

- Papaw Rigsby

And the correct answers are:

1. Klaus Störtebeker was a leader and the best known representative of a companionship of privateersprivateers known as the Victual BrothersVictual Brothers. Why Störtebeker received this nickname according to one of the legends?

- A large number of myths and legends surround the few facts known about Klaus Störtebeker's life. Störtebeker is only a nickname, meaning "empty the mug with one gulp" in Low SaxonLow Saxon . The moniker refers to the pirate's supposed ability to empty a four-litre mug of beer in one gulp.

Atlantic seamen in the West Indies had a bizarre superstition related to swine. Pigs themselves were held at great respect because they possessed cloven hooves just like the devil and the pig was the signature animal for the Great Earth Goddess who controlled the winds. As a result, these fishermen never spoke the word "pig" out loud, instead referring to the animal by such safe nicknames as Curly-Tail and Turf-Rooter. It was believed that mentioning the word "pig" would result in strong winds. Actually killing a pig on board the ship would result in a full scale storm.

The word "drown" can never be spoken at sea or it may summon up the actual event

2. What words are still avoided at sea?

- At sea, some words must be strictly avoided to ensure the ship and crew's safe return. These include obvious ones like "drowned" and "goodbye". If someone says "good luck" to you, it is sure to bring about bad luck. The only way to reverse the curse is by drawing blood, so usually a good punch in the nose will do.

3. How was named a marine in Ancient Greece?

- Epibatus

Congratulations to the winners!

Pirates: Tides of Fortune

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

... artilces are terms and conditions agreed to by the crew of the pirate ship. When ships were captured, sailors were sometimes given the opportunity to join a pirate crew by signing the Articles. Sometimes this was voluntary and other times it was choice between a cruel death and turning pirate. Surgeons and other people possessing special qualities who were sometimes allowed to remain with the crew as "guests" and were not forced to sign articles and were treated well so long as the performed their special duties for the crew and caused no trouble. Another condition was often that they testify on behalf of the crew should they wind up before a court.

These are some examples of the articles:

-If any man shall offer to run away, or keep any secret from the Company, he shall be marroon'd with one bottle of powder, one bottle of Water, one small Arm, and shot.

-That a man that shall strike another, whilst these Articles are in force, shall receive Moses's Law (that is 40 Stripes lacking one) on the bare Back.

… the Galleon was the ship of the line for its day. However it served the dual purpose of being both a Man-O-War and also a treasure/merchant ship. In the Golden age of Piracy, Spain has the most fortified Galleons in the water. A noticeable design of the galleon was that its hull sloped inward as it rose, tapering to a narrow top deck compared with the ship's beam at the water line. The purpose for this design was to concentrate the weight of its cannons close to the centerline of the ship in an attempt to improve stability. The galleon was heavily armed. It typically carried 74 guns, with 36 each of these being mounted on either side of the ship. The two remaining guns were mounted aft. This does not include the numerous swing guns mounted along the rail that were used to repel borders.
The Galleon was an extremely sleek ship and faster than many of her predecessors.

Galleons had fighting platforms built half way up the mainmast and foremast. When an enemy ship attempted to board a galleon, archers from these platforms would release a shower of arrows and crossbow bolts into the attackers. (Firearms were forbidden from the fighting tops for fear of sparks from the weapons setting the sails on fire).

A typical crew would consist of around 200 to 400 men. The Galleon could also carry as many as 40 paying passengers.

Pirates: Tides of Fortune

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

… Lo Hon-cho took command of 64 ships after her husband’s death in 1921. Youthful and reported to be pretty, she gained the reputation of being the most ruthless of all China's pirates. Lo Hon-cho's fleet attacked villages and fishing fleets in the seas around Beihai taking young women as prisoners and later selling them into slavery. In 1922 a Chinese warship intercepted the fleet destroying 40 vessels. Despite escaping, Lo Hon-cho was later handed to authorities by the remaining pirates in exchange for clemency

... Pilot was the man at the helm. The helmsman. The pilot was the man who steered the ship. Typically one man would be the master pilot who would work with the navigator and captain to pilot the ship over the water. The pilot needed to know such aspects as the ship's draught (how deep she sat in the water) how wide the ship was and how sharply she could turn. In shallow waters, the crew would take soundings (checking the depth of the water) and it would be up to the pilot to either steer the ship or sometimes stand at the bow and relay orders back to the man at the helm which way to steer the ship.
